Corporate Challenge Series Continues with Soccer

The 2019 SD4S Summer Soccer Series (part of our Corporate Challenge series of events) was again a huge success thanks to the participation of all 4 companies returning from last year: UBS, Interactive Brokers, Nestle Waters NA (NWNA) and Point 72.

The event took place over 2 Monday evenings (July 8th and July 15th) with Point 72 and UBS winning their playoff games against Interactive Brokers and NWNA respectively to setup a repeat of last year's final.

In the 3rd/4th place playoff, NWNA started out strong to jump into a 3-0 lead initially. Interactive Brokers fought back valiantly to reduce the deficit but were unable to completely overhaul Nestle Waters NA's lead, and NWNA ran out the eventual winners by 5-3.

The final game was once more a hotly contested affair. A very tightly balanced first half saw the score level 1-1 at half time. The second half continued the frenetic pace of the first, and chances on goal were limited early on. That all changed with UBS scoring twice in rapid succession to make the score 3-1 with 10 minutes to go. Any premature thoughts of a celebration were put on hold by a goal for Point 72 with 2 minutes remaining. More late drama ensued when, with almost the last kick of the game, Point 72 were awarded a direct free-kick on the edge of the UBS penalty area. The UBS goalkeeper pulled off a heart-stopping save to prevent the goal and that sealed the Championship victory for the Swiss team, in a reverse of last year's final result.

The company teams were boosted by the participation of 4 players from the Stamford Youth Soccer League (SYSL) who will graduate from Stamford High Schools in 2020 and therefore will be eligible to apply for the scholarships resulting from this fundraising event.

Players on the corporate teams "pay to play" by donating to SD4S in each game. Over $2,000 was raised from player donations alone and that number will climb to over $3,000 after corporate matching, enough to fund 3 scholarship awards to graduating high school seniors in 2020.
