Why We Were Created?

Mortarboard and diplomaLocal Dollars for Local Scholars

In a complex world, a quality education is vital to success. But higher education is expensive causing many talented and deserving students in Stamford graduating from high school only to find the door to higher education closed. Rising costs, dwindling financial aid and fewer scholarships conspire to derail their aspirations.

In 2011, for the first time ever in the U.S., college debt exceeded credit card debt. Scholarships are more important than ever. Each of the surrounding Connecticut towns to Stamford has a community-wide scholarship foundation - and now Stamford  does too. Stamford Dollars for Scholars is the only organization in Stamford that is devoted solely to scholarships. With scholarships as our singular focus, we continue to become a magnet for not only students interested in acquiring information on scholarships and how to afford post-secondary education, but also for donors, sponsors and others interested in supporting scholarships within the local community.

Stamford Dollars for Scholars was established to fill a void in our community by providing scholarship assistance to high school graduates who live or attend high school in Stamford, and who want to pursue education beyond high school. We share a passionate belief that education changes the lives of individuals and communities for the better.

We were conceived around a simple idea: together we can step in and help local students achieve their educational goals. There's no greater gift we can give our student neighbors-in-need than access to the tools to create a brighter future. Doing so tells them that we take pride in their determination and share their dreams.

Our Mission

Stamford Dollars for Scholars® has a singular mission: to mobilize our community to support local students who might otherwise miss the chance to pursue their education beyond high school. We raise awareness by speaking at local organizations and parent/student groups, exhibiting at college fairs and informing the media. We raise funds and award scholarships that enable local students to pursue their educational dreams.

Our Connection to Scholarship America®

Stamford Dollars for Scholars is one of over 500 Dollars for Scholars affiliates throughout America. The first Dollars for Scholars chapter was formed in Fall River, MA in 1958. Dollars for Scholars is part of Scholarship America, a national organization which has distributed more than $2.9 billion in scholarship assistance to more than 1.9 million students, funding both entry-level and multi-year scholarships and emergency financial grants.

Scholarship America has received an A+ rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy's Charity Watch and has received a Four-Star rating every year since 2001 from Charity Navigator. The benefits of their support are considerable and include partnerships with colleges and universities that benefit scholarship recipients. A strong national supporter, Katie Couric aired a segment honoring Scholarship America's founder, Dr. Irving Fradkin, on her show. She also donated the net proceeds of her book, The Best Advice I Ever Got, to Scholarship America which funded the Dream Award to provide scholarships to students. A Great Start

We're thrilled that SD4S was able to offer scholarships even before our first year anniversary, and offer additional scholarships during our second year in Stamford- that is quicker than any other Dollars for Scholars chapter in history. This fast start demonstrates that the Stamford community understands the vital role that education serves in the lives of young people, and is willing to help them through scholarships. This is also a testament to the dedication and vision of our officers and volunteers and the generosity of the sponsors and donors who have supported our efforts to date.
